It’s #ROW80 Update Time

My Goal: Read two chapters of Story Engineering a day until I finish it.

Test my grasp of those lessons on my WIP and short stories.

Hopefully by the time you read this, I’ll have done some writing, but so far none. Sunday I knew I wouldn’t because after work (I stayed late . . . again) I took my mom out to dinner. We had some delicious steaks.

Monday I worked too, but left at my normal time. Yay! And when I got home, I wanted to relax. Good thing because the next day of work SUCKED. It was one of those mentally taxing days, but I’m staying positive. And let me tell you how easy that is with so many cool peeps in this community. I say stuff here or on Twitter and people respond with encouragement, commiseration or a good laugh. Really is the best medicine.

Update: Right after dinner I squeezed out some words for the vamp novel. Felt good.

And now . . . Mandatory Reads! Everything I demand recommend you read this week.

Where do you stand on the competition debate? Do we have to fight for readers or does one’s success help others? Check out  Hate Propagates Hate Part Deux-The Competition Equation By Aimee L Saltler. She used to be a product and client manager to one of New Zealand’s top branding companies. Definitely worth a look.

So, you’ve probably heard of the alpha hero and the beta one, but what about the gamma? I was clueless and when I asked Kait about it, she ignited her super linking powers and directed me to The Perfect Hero by Jo Davis.

We’re always told to say more with less and on the Write Into Print blog, Rebecca Hamilton will help you Pimp Your POV. She gives many awesome examples on how to tighten up your character’s POV and continues the discussion (with more examples) in the comments.

Info stuff- Follow my ROW80 progress every Wednesday and Sunday and be here Tuesdays and Thursdays for new posts on me, writing, superheroes, monsters, comics and any other geeky stuff on my mind.

Also- After tomorrow’s post, I’m giving the blog a vacation for a week. I’ll still be lurking around the internet, though.

  1. Interesting link to the Gamma male post. I had no idea I’d written a Gamma for my second novel. The problem seems to be that publishers have no clue about the appeal of Gammas. It’s Alpha or Beta or nothing. Leave it to self-publishing to lead the pack!

    Have a great one!

  2. I’m looking forward to Jo Davis’ Hero post. Keep up the good work reading Story Engineering and writing!

  3. Sounds like I really need that Aimee Saltler book in my life. I respond to negative competition by… getting confrontational because I disagree with being confrontational? What? So yes, sounds like a good read.

  4. I’ll miss you during your blog vacation!

  5. Enjoy your blog vacation. 🙂

  6. Enjoy your vacation. Meanwhile will check out the links. 🙂

  7. @Gabrielle- It’s awesome to get confirmation you’re on the right track.

    @Tiffany- Thanks!

@Vicki- “I respond to negative competition by… getting confrontational because I disagree with being confrontational?” Hahahaha! You NEED that post.

@Claudia, Claire and Robin- Thanks! I’ll look for you guys on Twitter.

  8. Loved the Hero article from Jo Davis. Hadn’t heard of the Gamma male before.

Hopefully you got some words done. ^_^ I keep going back and revisiting Story Engineering, such a great and useful book.
