My Goal: Read two chapters of Story Engineering a day until I finish it.
Test my grasp of those lessons on my WIP and short stories.
Things are still very GOOD. I’ve kept up with my reading of Story Engineering. Right now I’m in a large section breaking down character into three specific dimensions which (obviously) equal a three dimensional character. Before that, a section on idea vs. concept. There’s a big difference. Some of this stuff was in my WIP, but I had no idea. I was just writing what I thought was a good story. Now that I have these elements so clearly defined, I can pick out where I nailed it and where I need more revisions. Of course I’ll have to discuss this with quality control to be sure I’m on the right track.
On the writing front I haven’t done any, mostly because of work and other responsibilities. I’ve only had small pockets time, which I don’t like writing to because by the time I get on a roll, my time is up. The time is there, I just have to BEND IT TO MY WILL so I stay productive. My brain’s still working, which means ideas are brewing. We all know what comes after that.
And now . . . Mandatory Reads! Everything I
demand recommend you read this week.
You must, must, MUST read How My Dog Saved My Life & Found My Husband by Piper Bayard. What a story about finding purpose and a reason to live. Just make sure you’ve got your kleenex, it’ll be worth it. And since we’re talking about Piper, let me throw two other reads your way. In The Doomsday Save Piper makes a fantastic observations on all the ways we self-sabotage ourselves along with her own story on how she overcame it. Finally, if you’re in the mood for a laugh, Doomsday Humor is the place to go. Just see for yourself.
Last week controversy started with a Z. In How Writers Are Like Road Construction Workers by Zoe Winters, she talks about her laziness as a writer and comes to the conclusion that many writers, if they’re being honest with themselves, are just as lazy. As per Zoe, she pulls no punches with her opinion, which led to follow up posts to clarify her point. Check it out, don’t take it personally and ask yourself; Am I lazy?
