Lose Yourself #ROW80 Update

My Goal: Finish revising my friggin’ book already!

The road to my goal: 250-500 words on workdays and 500-1000 on my days off.

The sometimes detour when I get stuck: Plot the next book.

In case you missed it. I revealed the awesome I talked about in my last update in this post, The Internet is Gigantimous and Awesome News. On to today’s update.

I’m writing this after getting home from a long Saturday, so I’m not sure if I’m going to spend my evening writing or plotting. Either way I’m in a good mood because I finished revising another chapter on Friday. I had no problems meeting my goals and it feels like a stronger habit is forming. So, yays all around.

And now for this weeks song.

I picked Lose Yourself by Eminem because it really fit where my head was at this week. It was written as part of the soundtrack to the sort of bio flick 8 Mile. The main character, played by Em, is at his lowest in life and needs to break out of the situation he’s in before it destroys him. The one thing that makes him happy is rapping and he’s good at it. The problem is, he doesn’t believe it. Eventually, he finds his confidence and decides to go after his dream. It’s something I really identify with, especially since I spent most of my twenties pursuing music.

At the risk of sounding very full of myself, I thought my band was good. Good enough to go places and at one point, I think we were at that crossroads of moving to the next level or not. For various reasons, the next level never happened and from time to time I wonder where we’d be if things had gone differently.

I think I’m at that crossroads again.

Here I am closer than ever to a finished book. When it’s finally ready, it’s going to be something worthwhile. People will want to read my story and I think they’ll like it. How many? I don’t know, but we’ll find each other. Again, not trying to be ego guy, just proud of the story I have to tell.

Besides that, I’ve gotten so much support through advice and friendship from all of you. I find it quite astounding and am so thankful for it. I don’t think I could repeat it if I tried a million times.

So this is it. My moment. To seize everything I’ve ever wanted. I don’t want to let it slip away.

Quick note: Some youtube videos aren’t playable unless you’re on the site, which defeats the purpose of uploading videos here for convenience. This is one of those videos, so I converted it to a quick time file. Hope that works for everyone.

Info stuff- I’ll be taking a week off the internet starting tomorrow and will be back Monday, April 25th to inject you peeps with some inspiration on the ROW80 blog. The only exception to my break will be update time. I won’t be posting anything, but I’ll be checking in see how all of you are doing. Be well.

  1. Sounds like you’re doing really well, I can relate to that crossroads metaphor. I’m heading down a better writing path at least. See you after your break.

  2. I like the idea of being at a crossroads and seizing your moment. Enjoy your ‘net break.

  3. It looks like you’re getting there Andrew. Keep it going.

  4. Love the song. Love the movie. Good choice! Once you get that bad boy polished to within an inch of its life be sure to treat your yourself. 🙂

  5. Being proud of your story, confident about what you have written is a good thing. Everything is coming together for you at the right time. Congrats and best of luck!

  6. I LOVE Eminem – and we will miss you online this week. Have a great week and good luck!

  7. Bravo that you’re writing for you and sharing that writing with others. I think you can always tell which stories are written solely at the pleasure of the writer and which are written solely for sale. The ones written for pleasure are so much more personal.

Enjoy your internet break! 🙂 Happy writing!

  8. @Katy- Thanks! Good to hear your on the right path too.

@Claire- I think at some point we find ourselves in this situation where we either do something stinky or get off the pot. Nothing’s getting me off the pot.

    @Kerry- Thanks, I will.

@Heather- Yes, there will be a mondo celebration when I have a book ready to publish. Maybe I’ll make it a cross-country party.

@Cathryn- Thanks! I figure I’ve got to believe in my story first or no one else will.

@Tiffany- I’m a big Em fan. I wouldn’t be surprised if he pops up again for inspirational Sunday.

@Sharon- Thanks! You’re right, this is exactly the kind of story I’d like to read. I’m having a blast writing it. It’s very personal and has a lot of me in it.

  9. That’s the most inspirational song including the the words “vomit” and “spaghetti” I know of. Now I finally watched the accompanying video- thanks for posting it. 🙂 The beginning reminds me of a scene in the movie “Scary Movie 3.”

Have an excellent week off the internet. See you later!

  10. I love that note of confidence I’m hearing. You are rocking, Andrew!

  11. so good to hear someone sure of what he’s written – I like self confidence – see you when you get back – I have a week away from internet next month – not sure I can do it!!!

  12. I joined a bit late, but I have a great excuse–vacation! Also now I’m motivated to get cracking on that WIP again. Would love to hear what your internet training revealed.
    Congrats on the great Progress.

  13. You don’t sound like Mr. Ego guy at all. Actually it’s very refreshing to hear a writer NOT beating themselves up or-in a low point- thinking their story sucks. 🙂 You rock!

Oh, Em. You got me through so much of my teenage white girl rage.
