Yeah . . . #ROW80 Update

My Goal: 1 hour, but minimum 30min of writing fiction during workdays and 2 hours any day I’m not working.

So not much writing since Sunday.  Why?  Errands, some housework and I’ve been trying to get on an exercise schedule again.  I suppose I had some ten or fifteen minute pockets of time available, but I don’t write very well that way.  I’m definitely rethinking my goals for the next round and I’ll probably play around with some ideas until round one is over.  Maybe by then I’ll have a better routine.  To say my sporadic progress is bothering me would be an understatement.

    • Thanks Ben and same to you for the week. I’ve been thinking all day about what I’ll do differently in round two. Should lead to a mega brain purge post one of these days.

  2. ROW80? Are we still doing that? Hahahahahaha. Seriously, because of my mom’s illness and the tremendous work load of my full time job this time of year, I haven’t touched my book. Bleh. So see? You’re doing much better than I am. :0)

  3. When I’m working on a first draft it’s really tough for me to write if I don’t have at least a three hour chunk of time available. Writing is a meditative process, and I can’t go from yang to yin at the drop of a hat. Maybe I should be able to, but that’s just not how it works for me. When I’m polishing I can slip in and out of my writing more easily, so having an hour to work is productive.

    I hope you’re able to find a system that works for you. My advice is pay attention to when you’re the most productive and try to schedule your writing sessions then. That way you’ll actually make progress instead of just staring at your monitor. 🙂 Once I started paying attention to my inner writing rhythm I got more accomplished and felt less anxious.

    • I’ve been thinking about it all day. The actual writing isn’t my problem, but everything else in my life and how I manage it around my writing. It’ll come down to me deciding what’s most important and cutting the rest, which will be hard.

      Three hours is nice. Sometimes I can get, but not usually.

  4. I am right there with you. It’s difficult to find the time and motivation…even though that’s what this ROW80 event was for in the first place! I’m not even sure I’ll be able (or willing) to do the second round. Ah me.

    • This challenge has brought to light my weaknesses. I’ve looked back at my previous updates and the highs and lows really jump out. I plan on going for round two. I like the motivation and support it brings and with a much better plan, I think I can make it work.

      I hope you’re able to find the motivation to keep writing whether it’s with this challenge or without. Maybe since the winter is almost over, things will get better.

      • I think with winter ending, I will feel more motivated. I’ve been thinking back over the years and I think this is my pattern… Spring comes and I’m so excited, and I end up writing through the summer, and then I’m depressed through the winter.

        Maybe I should try to break the pattern next year.

  5. I try and force myself to do something, anything, writing related when I only have five or ten minutes to spare. I’ve kind of trained myself into jumping in but sometimes my brain just won’t work that way. Anyway, hope you get in better form soon, getting frustrated tends to work against us when we do get a chance to look at a blank page.

    • I’m determined, Claire. I like ROW80 a lot and want to able to say it helped me finish my book. This morning I wasn’t in a very cheery mood, but the best way to combat that is with a solution. I’ll figure it out.

  6. My goals have changed more than the weather. I get on a roll for a few days then come to a halt. Just keep trying to find what works for you.
